Our Liturgy
Liturgy is an ancient word that simply means, "What we do when we come together for worship." It describes both the shape and elements of worship. The shape and elements of worship, which are regulated according to Scripture, will be the same from week to week.
The shape of our liturgy points to the Gospel.
The Lord Calls Us to Worship
The Lord Cleanses Us From Our Sin
The Lord Receives Us As His People
The Lord Consecrates Us By His Word
The Lord Feeds Us At His Table
The Lord Blesses and Commissions Us For Kingdom Service
The elements of our liturgy are all instituted by God in His Word.
The Reading and Preaching of Scripture (1 Timothy 4:13; 2 Timothy 4:2)
The Singing of Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs (Psalm 100:2; Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16)
The Offering of Prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-2; James 5:13-16)
The Collection of Tithes and Offerings (Psalm 96:8-9; 2 Corinthians 9:6-15)
The Confession of Faith (Hebrews 4:14, 10:23)
The Ministry of the Sacraments (Acts 2:38-39; 1 Corinthians 11:23-34)
While the shape and elements of worship will be consistent from week to week, the form each element takes will be flexible. This means that while each week there will always be certain elements like a “Confession of Faith”, one week we might sing a song as our “Confession of Faith” and another week we might recite an historic Church creed. It also means that we might spend more time focusing on one element of worship than another from service to service and during particular seasons.
